Είναι στον καναπέ με το εμπριμέ κάλυμμα, εκεί που σου άρεσε να ξαπλώνεις, εκεί που ξάπλωνες και την τελευταία εποχή που περάσαμε όμορφα. Έχουμε πολλά κοινά. Όπως εγώ ήθελα να μετράω πιθαμές κι ας είναι στο πάτωμα δίπλα σου, έτσι κι εσύ ήθελες πάντα να είσαι με κάποιον. Μετά μεγαλώνουμε και μας αναγκάζουν (ή μόνοι μας υπακούμε) να μην δείχνουμε αισθήματα. Γιατί; Κι όμως θυμάμαι, ναι, όλο θυμάμαι, ίσως θυμάσαι κι εσύ. Ακόμα κι αν δεν θες, δεν προσπαθήσεις, δεν σ' αφήσουν να θυμηθείς. Κάποτε θα σου 'ρθουν πίσω εικόνες. Όπως οι πετρούλες απ' το καλοκαίρι. Είναι όμορφες εικόνες. Ν' αφήνεις το φως να κυριεύει πάντα στη ζωή. Να 'ναι ο βασιλιάς στο σκάκι σου. Να 'ναι το κομμένο κουτί που έκανες κουμπαρά και μέσα έχει ένα παλιό δεκάδραχμο (που να το βρήκες άραγε), μερικά βότσαλα κι αλλιώτικα διπλωμένα χαρτιά. Καμιά μουτζούρα σου δεν ήταν άσκοπη, κανένα χρώμα σου δεν ήταν τυχαίο, καμιά φωνή σου, κανένα παιχνίδι σου, τίποτα. Αυτά σε κάνουν ελεύθερο να προσπαθείς τώρα να σιωπάς.

A single cell on a sheet of brass on a table, sitting together on a wall of steel, was a sign of respect, for a way to be welcomed. In their world, "we have to listen and live" was seen as a sign of "proper behavior."

In this era, as today exists in modern-day Europe, "we must learn to listen" was viewed as a form of behavior rather than one of desire. This is not to say that some individuals would simply listen their way out of their circumstances. In the midst of a great depression, for instance, "we simply must listen for the good of the people rather than the sick of ourselves."

The second form is simply an expression of being in touch with the people, to say "here's what you need today" and "when your time comes, you'll be here later."

"A man is happy if, with the help he has, he gets to hear something that others can't hear him hear, and his happiness grows. Now the joy is not in the happiness and the hope, but in a man who can hear and appreciate the best."

The third, to the point of being a means to an end, is to be an activist and to learn to escape as a stow-away DJ and achieve a cheerful landing someday.
